Description

Welcome to the 3rd edition of the Integrated Structural Biology course, organized by SciLifeLab and NordStruct. The course will take place over two weeks across Stockholm, Linköping, Lund, and Gothenburg.
During the course, participants will be introduced to a wide range of structural biology techniques available at research infrastructures in Sweden. The program combines lectures, site visits, and hands-on discussions, offering opportunities for in-depth learning, networking, and project-specific discussions with experts.
The course includes social activities such as dinners and informal gatherings, providing further opportunities to connect with fellow participants and instructors.

Learning Outcomes

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the principles, strengths, and limitations of major structural biology methods, including cryo-EM, NMR, crystallography, SAXS/SANS, structural proteomics, biophysical characterization, AlphaFold, and protein production.

  • Explain how different structural biology techniques can be combined in an integrated workflow to address biological research questions.

  • Identify suitable Swedish research infrastructures, facilities, and expertise for specific structural biology projects.

  • Discuss experimental design considerations for selecting and combining structural biology approaches.

  • Interpret how computational methods, including AlphaFold and other AI-based approaches, can support structural biology research.

  • Present and discuss their own structural biology-related research questions or projects with experts and peers.

  • Build connections with researchers, infrastructure staff, and other course participants across the Swedish structural biology community.

Prerequisites & Technical Requirements

Prerequisites

Participants should have a basic understanding of molecular biology, protein science, or structural biology. Prior familiarity with one or more structural biology methods, such as cryo-EM, NMR, crystallography, SAXS/SANS, biophysical characterization, structural proteomics, AlphaFold, or protein production, is beneficial but not strictly required. The course is suitable for participants who want to broaden their understanding of integrated structural biology approaches and Swedish research infrastructure services.

Technical requirements

Participants should bring a laptop suitable for hands-on computer-based practicals and discussions. Basic command-line or computational skills may be useful for practical sessions involving AlphaFold, AI in structural biology, molecular dynamics, and integration of structural biology data.
