Training at SciLifeLab often involves facilitating discussions and collaborative activities. A successful facilitator takes responsibility for the environment of a course exercise, discussion, or workshop, which involves working to build a culture of respect, sharing, and inclusivity, and fostering an environment conducive to learning. Implementing facilitation techniques and collaborative practices can assist in achieving that goal. Asking for feedback from participants, colleagues, or requesting a teaching audit from the Training Hub can be valuable in developing as a facilitator and instructor.

Our basic recommendations for facilitation include:

• Be familiar with the SciLifeLab Code of Conduct, which governs all affiliated learning activities.
• Plan activities where the flow of information travels between participants as well as between instructor and participants.
• Read the Training Hub’s facilitation guide for examples of how to create fruitful group discussion.

In addition to planning for engaging learning experiences, tools are available to assist in actively engaging your participants to help foster their learning. Tools such as Mentimeter or the Google suite can be used to get instant feedback on the learning process of your participants as they follow your training. Most Universities in Sweden have an institutional Mentimeter license. Follow the link below to sign in using your institutional credentials.

At the end of your training delivery, those who have fulfilled your requirements for completion should receive a course certificate. The SciLifeLab Training Hub provides a Course Certificate App with SciLifeLab branding to easily create certificates for participants.

Participants should also receive a survey to provide insight into their experience of the course that can help to guide training development. Depending on your training format, this can range from asking for a self-reported learning outcome (ie: What did you learn in this session?) or a more thorough survey about prior learning and application of the material. The SciLifeLab Training Hub provides short term and long term feedback survey templates through the Google forms that you can use or adapt for your training.
